On December 7, 1941, America suddenly entered into one of the largest conflicts in history, World War Two, when the Japanese attacked on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Considered the "Last Good War", people view World War Two as one that united the nation like never before. When the war arrived in 1941, life in America completely changed to focus on the war and providing aid. Campaigns were released for people to purchase war bonds, news about the war headlined the newspapers, and goods were rationed to contribute to the war effort. "Victory Gardens" were planted, to produce more food and metal was recycled to be reused again.
The state of Pennsylvania experienced great prosperity during World War Two. Arthur Mills, the governor at the time, boasted that Pennsylvania would become the "Arsenal of America". Since Pennsylvania was one of the greatest producers of both bituminous and anthracite coal, steel mills from Pennsylvania were responsible for producing one-third of the United States' fuel and one-fifth of the supply for the world. These steel mills greatly contributed to the two-ocean navy needed to be victorious in the war. Women became an estimated one third of the workforce during this time period, as the majority of the men nationwide entered the war. A city that was greatly impacted by the war was Philadelphia, which experienced an increase of fifty percent in just ten years of African Americans in search for jobs in factories. This created severe housing shortages, which was then resolved by public housing that was government- funded. Technologies created during the war also greatly impacted the counrties success, as states were rapidly producing guns, aircrafts, and crucial elements of various weapons. Approximately 1.25 million people from Pennsylvania fought in World War Two, including top general, George C. Marshall, from Uniontown. The war resulted in an immense amount of casualties, more than 33,000 of them being natives of Pennsylvania.
